Chuck Bennett: Society Garden Party blossomsNaming an event "The Garden Party" automatically conjures pleasant thoughts — a sister's wedding reception, a cousin's graduation party, the movie "The Great Gatsby" and, of course, the classic 1972 hit song by Rick Nelson called "Garden Party." So when Sydney and Elizabeth Ross founded The Garden Party Foundation, they were off to a great start.
The foundation's mission is to support local charities with money raised at The Garden Party. On June 12, they raised more than $30,000 for Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan and the Oakland Community College Culinary Studies Institute.
The premier food and wine event featured 30 local restaurants and 100 wines. Guests were presented with a wine glass and a plate with a wine glass holder upon entry.
Most women wore hats (none could match the white ostrich feather number that Diana Hunt wore) and men were in their finest garden party gear.
There were three tents, all filled with food and wine stations. And the dishes were as varied as the names, such as the sinful burger from Red Coat Tavern or the tuna tartare in a miso sesame cone from Wolfgang Puck.
Talented jazz bassist Marion Hayden, a part of the group Straight Ahead, performed with a trio under the middle tent.
A comfortable seating area, where many guests retreated after partaking in the orgy of food and wine, was adjacent to the tents on the manicured lawn of Academy of the Sacred Heart in Bloomfield Hills.
Several guests arrived in fabulous classic and vintage cars that were displayed upfront at the beginning of the party.
Tickets to The Garden Party were $100, and more than 600 guests attended.

The event ends with breakfast, with local businesses donating the food. The Town of Orangetown also provides funds to Project Graduation parties in the town, including $1000 to Pearl River this year. Entertainment includes a DJ and a hypnotist.
