Crowd gathers at Mountain Home Plaza to honor the fallen

A strong breeze fluttered hundreds of flags as a large crowd gathered on the Mountain Home Plaza Monday to honor those who gave their lives in service to the United States.

Hosted by the Fleet Reserve Association, the Memorial Day service drew a large crowd to the square, from families with small children to Harley-riding Vietnam vets.

The majority of people, however, were white-haired veterans from Vietnam, Korea, and World War II, proudly wearing service related regalia.

The Mountain Home High School Brass Quintet Band and the Ozark Naturals provided patriotic music for the ceremony while Chaplain Art Wallace conducted the prayers.

All local veteran's organizations were represented at the ceremony on stage and in the color guard. The Knights of Columbus passed out American flags.

The keynote speaker for the day was retired U.S. Navy Capt. David Davis. Davis spent 21 years in the Navy as an opthamologist. During that time, he met, operated on, and became friends with Master Sgt. Barry Rhoden.

Davis told the crowd part of Rhoden's story.

"The real reason I am here today is to tell you a story about a friend.

"I first met Master Sgt. (ret) Berry Rhoden in the exam chair of my eye lane.

"He was a tall, slender, older gentleman with striking blue eyes. The left one was almost scarred shut. He said it was from old trauma. We set about trying to repair it. Two years and five surgeries later, the eye was in good shape, and by then he was a good friend.

"Berry lived a long, fruitful life. He loved his wife dearly and would tell you so. After he retired from the Army, he served as a deputy sheriff, a truant officer, boy scout leader and deacon in his church.

"He had a special relationship with each of his children. He made a lot of friends. I doubt there were three people in the town of McClenney, Fla., not present at his funeral.

"As a young man of 18, Berry was captured at the Pusan Perimeter in the Korean War. Many of his comrades were shot or bayonetted in front of him. He was interrogated and he was tortured.

"The old trauma to his left eye was because his interrogator was right-handed. At one point, he was told to talk or he would be shot. Berry, wouldn't talk.

"Berry and three others were taken to a dry rice paddy and machine-gunned down. But Berry wouldn't die. He had promised his wife he would come home to her. He meant it.

"After Berry regained consciousness, he decided to play dead until dark, lying there in a welter of blood with three bodies and a bullet wound through his left lower abdomen, just over his hipbone.

Phía trước là hình tượng một người đã chết do bị đầu độc, cơ thể đã hết sức sống, mềm nhũn vắt mình trên đùi người sống. Hình tượng được thể hiện với đầu gối gập, đầu ngoắt về phía sau, cánh tay duỗi thẳng, bàn tay co quắp như vừa trải qua một sự đau đớn đến tột độ và trở về cõi vĩnh hằng trong sự đau đớn và căm phẫn. Người phía sau, một tay đỡ đồng nạn, một tay giơ cao. Mắt ngước nhìn lên, lồng ngực căng phồng như dồn về phía trước. Nét mặt căm hờn đang thét lời kêu gọi nhân loại hãy chứng kến và trả thù cho họ. lập là khối người sống, căng và thẳng trong dáng vươn cao. Bụng hóp lại đối lập với bộ ngực gầy guộc đang căng tròn dồn nén. Khối cơ bắp của vai và cánh tay hằn lên, gân guốc, những ngón tay như đang rút lại hết cỡ co quắp, biểu hiện sự căm hờn dâng cao lên tột đỉnh.  Những sáng tác của Diệp Minh Châu trong giai đoạn này ít nhiều chịu ảnh hưởng của phái Ấn tượng. Ông đã vượt qua cách tạo khối căng tròn, hoàn thiện của điêu khắc cổ điển. Bề mặt tượng của ông lúc này đầy biểu cảm, chúng ta có cảm giác như những nhát bút nông sâu, dài ngắn xếp đặt một cách ào ạt theo dòng chảy của cảm xúc người tạc tượng.
