A Spicy Profit
Ive a guy a blender and chunks of raw turmeric and watch what happens. For Daniel Sullivan, 34, hitting the power button stirred the creation of TumericAlive , a New York-based company that produces Tumeric Elixir, a beverage with the key ingredient a botanical most people know as a component of curry powder.
(For the record, Sullivan preferred the sound of “tumeric” to “turmeric,” overriding the word’s traditional spelling.)
Health experts share Sullivan’s vision. “In the past two years I’ve seen a lot more interest in turmeric from dietary-supplement and tea-and-beverage manufacturers,” says Mark Blumenthal, founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council , who also consults with businesses whose products make health claims. “Because of the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits associated with turmeric, many larger companies are trying to figure out how they’re going to participate in offering turmeric to consumers.”
Typically, these bigger fish closely watch smaller companies’ success with niche products. Green tea is a good example of how the success of an exotic item or ingredient can spur conglomerate interest.
Sullivan, who didn't have a background in the food or holistic industries, learned of the plant on a farm trip to Maui. When he arrived, he found that turmeric was the farm’s biggest cash crop. “It was palatable and didn’t taste medicinal or bitter,” says Sullivan.
It was the end of 2008, and the ecologically minded Sullivan, a carpenter by trade, was there for a working vacation on an organic farm. He snacked that day on raw turmeric —a botanical with bright-orange flesh that’s part of the ginger family—which he bought at a health-food store after a staffer touted its anti-inflammatory and other health benefits.
It doesn't hurt that his elixir is benefiting his bottom line. While TumericAlive may be an anti-inflammatory thirst-quencher, some might call it anti-budget. A 12-oz. container retails for up to $7. A 32-oz. container sells for between $9 and $11. “It’s a health-empowering designer drink with a unique market, and you really get much more than you’re paying for,” he says. Earlier this year he introduced a second version sweetened with organic agave for vegans who don’t ingest honey. The beverage, which comes with an expiration date, is sold in retailers’ refrigerated sections. Sullivan is working on mail-order sales, which he expects to be up and running by the year’s end.
