Their Toronto-based rockabilly/punk band, Johnny and the G-Rays, had a lot of traction until the wheels came off in an alcoholic wipeout.

“Yes, we were big, but we could have been huge,” Palm said of the band.

Separately, Macleod and Palm relate the details of the band’s fatal moment: there was a billeting house in Ottawa. Palm was loaded on tequila and a fight broke out. Johnny took blows to the ribs and a jawbreaker to the face. It was game over.

“I broke Johnny’s jaw, grabbed my guitars and walked away,” Palm said. “It was horrible. It was awful. I still get a sick feeling right now as I’m talking about it.”

Palm has been sober for more than seven years. Johnny and the G-Rays reunited about five years ago.

“I strongly suggest sobriety for anybody who wants to become a better guitar player,” Macleod said. “Harri has been mind-blowing ever since he’s been sober. Music can be mind-blowing without drugs.”

Harri Palm sits on a comfy, threadbare chair in the cavernous workshop/rehearsal space he occupies along the Speed River in downtown Guelph.
