It's summer, but 'Are we there yet?'

Seacoasters: Summer vacation is upon us! OK, so the exclamation point indicates some level of excitement and not all of us big kids are on school break. Still, there's an undeniable vibe of joy when the wee ones are on scholastic sabbatical. In the spirit of balanced prose, it must be mentioned there is a down side for all the parents out there, though.

You may travel varying distances this summer, so reality is at some point you'll have to answer the age-old question: "Are we there yet?" It is as annoying as the sound of an alarm clock on a morning that feels like a Sunday but isn't.

Even if you're taking one of these fancily phrased "staycations" — a Jedi mind trick for "we aren't going anywhere, the economy stinks and we live near the beach anyway, so deal with it, kids" — you still have to be prepared for car rides. Children often lack patience on journeys, so regardless of whether you're day-tripping, beach skipping or busting out of town, they'll ask the aforementioned, dreaded question. And yes, you'll cringe.

One's own parent can be a wonderful resource when trying to solve life's little quandaries. After all, they've been there, done that, written the memoir (well, it's on the list at least). My own mom, Connie of the Hampton Sullivans, was asked about the "are we there yet" phenomenon. She helped me realize it wasn't so much about the drive's duration as it was the duration of the in-flight snacks. Since there's a 9-year-old boy living under my roof who could out-eat the Cookie Monster and world hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut combined, that makes perfect sense to me.

While many children will ask "are we there yet," what they are really asking is, "do we have enough chow to cover this road trip." So when your kids ask if you are there yet in the middle of four lanes of nothingness, aside from pulling to the side of the road and saying, "yes, hop out and enjoy all the side of this state highway has to offer," be ready to give them more granola and crunchy things. Bring plenty because kids eat, eat some more, eat again, and then eat whatever's left on the floor mats.

Be cautious of overeating, too, as car sickness isn't fun for anybody in the vehicle; not that car sickness is only caused by extra snacks. It can just happen. You can just get sick at any point, and unfortunately a car isn't the ideal place to be. Ask Hampton's Mike Cropper.
