(BOSTON, MA) – When it comes to philanthropy one group of merchants that are synonymous with stepping up to the plate when people are in need are restaurateurs. Next week some of Greater Boston’s best restaurants are stepping up and donating a portion of their proceeds to the American Red Cross to assist with Tornado relief efforts in Western Massachusetts.

SALEM — Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose portrait hangs prominently in the Hawthorne Hotel, is going to have to make room on the wall for a man who is not so famous and has been largely forgotten in his hometown.
Yesterday, a painting of Frank Poor, the founder of Sylvania, was donated to the hotel. The large picture will hang in the main lobby.
That might seem like a strange place for a portrait of a self-educated Salem native who was a pioneer in the lighting industry. But Poor, it turns out, may have more claim on the Hawthorne Hotel than ... well, Hawthorne himself.
"He was really a driving force" behind the building of the hotel, said Juli Lederhaus, the hotel's general manager.
The Hawthorne Hotel, which opened in 1925, was built with funds raised by the whole community. Or, to be more accurate, by the business community, which raised more than $500,000 by selling shares.
Poor led that two-year effort as president of the Salem Hotel Corporation. During opening ceremonies, he even climbed to the roof and raised the American flag.
The motivation of Poor and other business leaders was partially self-interest, according to Lederhaus. They wanted a hotel where their business clients could stay.
"It wasn't built like a resort hotel," Lederhaus said. "It was built like a business hotel."
That would explain why the 89-room Hawthorne opened with 150 rooms, small chambers just big enough for a businessman to get a good night's sleep.
The portrait of Poor donated to the hotel has a history of its own. For years, it was in the lobby of Sylvania's headquarters in Danvers with a small plaque that reads: "Frank A. Poor, 1879-1956, Founder.
