Memorial halfway through $60 million addition

• Location: The hospital is pushing forward on major construction at both its main Chattanooga campus as well as its North Park location in Hixson, according to spokesman Brian Lazenby.

• Status: The project was initiated in July 2010, and Lazenby expects it to be complete by June 30, 2012.

• Price: The total cost is $60 million, with about $32 million going toward actual construction and the rest earmarked for other cost such as permitting, architectural drawings and regulatory compliance.

• Features: There are five major components to the project: A $24 million power plant will be completed in May 2012. In addition to new generators and cooling towers, the project includes a number of new infrastructure upgrades to the hospital. In the hospital itself, a non-surgical medical services expansion will cost $5.3 million, and is slated for a spring 2012 completion. The new clinical decision unit is a 30-bed observation ward built on top of the current emergency room that will cost $8 million, and new operating rooms, including one that contains imaging equipment, will be finished by fall 2011 at a cost of $10.5 million. At the North Park location, workers are conducting a $4.8 million utility upgrade, which will be done in spring 2012.
