After More Than Four Decades On-Air, Tom Skilling Says His Job is Still 'An ...
After 44 years in broadcasting, meteorologist Tom Skilling – a Windy City icon and a viewer favorite nationwide thanks to his more than three decades at superstation WGN - says not only is retirement of no interest right now, he’s still having a blast reporting Chicago’s weather.
“I tell young people that if they had to drop into a profession at a particular time in history, the last fifty years in meteorology has been the era in which to be there, and it continues to be to this day,” Skilling tells TVSpy.
“When I started, we had no real-time satellite imagery, we had no Doppler radar, computer models had not happened.”
Technology has changed, but Skilling’s on-air appeal has not. His passion for his job is apparent to viewers, who’ve made him a weather superstar. We caught up with Skilling at Thursday night’s gala opening of the Museum of Broadcast Communication, which he helped make happen.
“I’ve been so lucky,” Skilling says. ”I think the first three-quarters of my career I thought they were going to fire me every day I came into work. Honestly. I’d look at tapes and I was so critical of myself.”
“I’ve always been fascinated by the weather. I’m fascinated by its effect on people’s lives. It affects the way we feel, our moods, the way businesses proceed – it affects every facet of our lives. And to be a little piece of that, have a little role in communicating that information to people, is an awful lot of fun.

With the spring weather season becoming more & more severe, this event looks to educate and prepare those in attendance for the possibilities of bad weather. Tom Skilling will personally be meeting with attendees at the event in an effort to talk about the importance of advance weather warnings to prevent injuries or even death when severe weather happens. The event is also an attempt to get NOAA Weather Alert radios into as many homes as possible, as these radios can help saves lives in a weather emergency. "Tom's Weather Day" will take place at the Walgreens located at 235 Palatine Road in Arlington Heights on Saturday May 21st, from 11:00am-2:00pm. NOAA Weather Alert Radios, made by Midland Radio, will be sold at a reduced cost at the event. NOAA weather specialists will be on hand to program the radios for purchasers. These NOAA Weather Alerts radios immediately notify owners of severe weather or emergency alert signals broadcasted by the National Weather Service. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these radios will be donated to the American Red Cross. There will be much more going on at this event Saturday, as well. The Arlington Heights Walgreens this Saturday will be a WeatherBug Weather Station. A WeatherBug representative will be onsite to interact with guests and explain how the WeatherBug station works. The Arlington Heights Fire Department will be at the event with their severe weather tornado simulator truck, showing guests how to take precaution during a severe storm. The Cook County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management will be offering advice on how to prepare a safe room and other general preparedness.
