Electric cars arrive in Sammamish

As of May 21, Sureshkumar, a 33-year-old resident of the Westmont neighborhood, is the proud owner of an electric car – the Nissan Leaf.

“We’re setting the bar for future generations,” Sureshkumar said as he showed off his new ride. “I have a baby who is going to be grown up someday – I ought to do something.”

No exact numbers exist detailing how many local residents have taken the plunge on the new technology, but planners and advocates around the Puget Sound area hope that more will arive in the coming years as consumers get more comfortable with the idea of switching from gas-powered cars, and producers are able to perfect the technology.

Cities are starting to install chargers in public locations like libraries and schools and private developments like shopping malls. Tom Saxton, a Sammamish resident and board member at electric car advocacy group Plug In America, said the Bellevue Square area has close to 15 chargers. Redmond City Hall has two chargers.

Closer to home, Sammamish is aiming to have chargers installed at its City Hall in the next two to four months, Community Development Director Kamuron Gurol said. Regency Centers, which manages the QFC and Safeway shopping centers, is in the process of installing chargers in some of its Oregon facilities and expressed interest in installing them in Washington next, Gurol said.

Sureshkumar said having more public chargers, which are generally 220 volts and give a battery an extra 12 miles per hour of charge, will cut down on one of the only stresses to confront an electric car driver – so-called “range anxiety,” or fear that a driver will run out of battery charge far away from home or a charging station.

Though he’s only had it for a matter of days, Sureshkumar said range hasn’t been an issue yet. He and his wife have taken the car on errands around Sammamish and have driven it to and from Sureshkumar’s job in Bellevue.

Soon they plan to push it a little further and carpool to his wife’s job in Seattle and back.

Sureshkumar said it shouldn’t be a problem – as a general rule the Leaf goes around 100 miles on a charge.

That can, of course, vary depending on the type of driving and whether or not you have a heater or air conditioner on in the vehicle.

According to Nissan’s estimates, a driver can squeeze 138 miles out of a fully charged battery while at cruising 38 mph with no air conditioning. In constant stop-and-go traffic with the air conditioner going, a battery may be sapped in as little as 48 miles.
