Patch 4.2: Rage of the Firelands guides and patch notes now available

Patch 4.2 is on the horizon as Blizzard has made guides and patch notes available for Rage of the Firelands, the next exciting chapter in the Cataclysm story. Players can go the WoW community website for content and feature guides on everything from the dungeon journal and Thrall's epic quest Elemental Bonds, to Firelands armor set previews and explanations about the new daily quest hubs. Also available are the PVP content features, the developer balance changes and casual content blogs, as well as a dedicated section (that is not yet updated) for troubleshooting and known patch issues. Everything is available in one place, a new, comprehensive listing that Blizzard hasn't really done for other patches before. It's a really nice touch.

Really worried about this patch now. I play a Disc/Holy priest and there is no spirit cloth available in the entire instance (except one randomly itemised head slot item), we can only gear up via VPs for those slots. So after a couple of weeks of successful raiding when all the other healers are sporting some off-set gear in their armour slots, giving them far greater throughput and increased mana regen, priests will at best be able to give more throughput with vastly reduced mana regen (so no "staying power" as it were) or the same throughput as T11 and the same level of mana regen both of which will be way behind the other healers.

"Glyph of Ferocious Bite has been redesigned. It now causes Ferocious Bite to heal the caster for 1% of maximum health for each 10 energy used."

vs.

"Glyph of Dark Succor has been redesigned. Rather than placing a 15% maximum health floor on Death Strike healing while in Frost or Unholy Presence, it causes the next Death Strike within 15 seconds after killing a foe that yields experience or Honor Points to heal for at least 20% of the death knight's maximum health (still requires Frost or Unholy Presence)."

Is there a smiley for a middle finger to Blizzard? Because I'd rather my DK had an effect similar to the druid rather than the Dark Suck-or one we're getting.

/sigh

Artificial, you apparently don't do heroics all that often, or if you do you're either lucky enough to avoid most of the AoEs mobs can throw out or you have a godly healer. Dark Succor was a godsend to PvE DPS Death Knights, since before we would have interrupt our rotations and spam 3 or 4 Death Strikes just to deal with incidental damage from enemy AoEs. 15% may have been a bit overpowered, but it could've easily been lowered to 12 or 10% and we still would've been fine. Changing Dark Succor to a weak Victory Rush is a nasty hit to our survivability during boss fights.

WOW Quest Guide - Enter at Your Own Rift: The no-quest challenge

OK, I know you all probably want to talk aboutthe news that addons are coming toRIFT, but the truth is that its not that big of an issue for me. My feelings on addons are that Im for them if they enhance the game and encourage player creativity, but Im against them if they reduce players to mere statistics in the eyes of others (GearScore) or are absolutely necessary to tackle the games content.

So if you feel passionate about this topic, I give you leave to vent more about it in the comments below, but as for me and mine, were going to look at quests today. More specifically, not doing them.

Now, I generally like quests. They give me a feeling of accomplishment (as I am fond of checking off items from my to-do lists in real life), the stories are occasionally interesting, and they give nice boosts to leveling. But Ive come to realize something interesting aboutRIFT that might run under the radar of most: Quests are superfluous to the game. Well, at the very least, theyre optional and not the mandatory tasks that most modern MMOs make them out to be.

So I had a thought. What about playing RIFT without questing at all — taking on a no-quest challenge of sorts? Is it not only possible but fun too? Hit the jump and well examine this from all the angles.

To quest or not to quest, that is the question

Questings gotten a pretty bad name in MMO circles, to be sure. What used to be a rare facet of online RPGs became the default leveling track inwow quest helpers addons the post-World of Warcraft era. Quests as the meat of MMOs became widely embraced even as players quickly identified the repetitive nature of the tasks given to them. Soon, kill 10 rats and FedEx chores were synonymous with questing, and captivating quests that told a good story and gave players interesting challenges were the exception rather than the rule.

And I say this as an avid quester in all MMOs I play. Questing may not be deep on the whole, but even the most generic of tasks do provide motivation, purpose and reward. I just never liked the feeling that I had to do quests due to a lack of alternatives.

The interesting thing about RIFT is that there are plenty of alternatives to questing — so many, really, that you could eschew questing altogether and be just fine. I dont remember who said it, but I had a friend who claimed that quests were a late addition to RIFT, that the game originally was solely dominated with the dynamic content, butTrion Worlds got scared that players would flounder without the familiar hand of questing in such an environment. I doubt thats true at all, but it would be an understandable decision. Were so used to questing that to not have it in an MMO is a frightening proposition.
