Fighting the flood

During the first week she was there, Zieg and the other volunteers had a mission to feed all the people who were helping to fill sandbags and make dikes. In the town of Bismarck, Zieg said the Red Cross and the Salvation Army worked very closely together to provide food for all of these volunteers and to distribute that food. The sandwiches they were distributing were prepared at first for several days by volunteers. Later on, the National Red Cross asked Bismarck State College to make the sandwiches. There were three or four sandbag-making sites. People who needed sandbags to build a dike to keep the water from reaching their homes could go to the sites to pick up bags. Zieg and the other volunteers helped feed people who were sandbagging at their homes, volunteers who were helping at the homes and people who were making sandbags at the different sites. To deliver the food, Zieg and her fellow volunteers rode in Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs), which she said looked similar to an ambulance. They put together bags of food in the back of the vehicle as they drove. Zieg would ride near the window on the side of the ERV. When they stopped at a site, she would hand lunches or breakfasts out the window. In Bismarck, there were also 1,500 members of the National Guard directing traffic. Zieg said once the dump trucks came through town, all of the traffic was stopped so the trucks could make their way through without stopping. There were also a lot of airboats and other types of boats on hand during the first week in case there was a drastic flood situation, Zieg said. During the second week Zieg was in Bismarck, their focus started to turn toward providing shelters for anyone who was going to be displaced by the flood. They prepared the shelters with cots and other necessary supplies. Zieg said the Red Cross promised to provide shelter for as many as six thousand people in a very short notice. Although there was not a severe need for shelter while Zieg was there, she said the Red Cross has promised it will be there if it is needed. A dike could have broken or a levee could have gone at any time, Zieg said. As Zieg thought of her experience in Bismarck, she remembered all of the reasons she wanted to become a Red Cross volunteer. One of these reasons was her great-aunt Margaret Diers, who was from Gresham. Diers was a volunteer for the Red Cross during World War I. She was a social worker and went to Greece to help with the orphanage during the war.
