Consult a doctor to ensure that your kidneys and sinuses are functioning well. Ask for dietary advice too. Do not leave make-up or cream around your eyes at night when you sleep. It can cause puffiness around the eyes. Apply a compress of iced water or cold milk directly on your closed lids; leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Or soak cotton wool pads in chilled rose water and let them rest under your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. It's a good idea to lie down and rest while you do this. Grated potatoes or potato juice, applied around the eyes also helps reduce puffiness. So do tea bags. Steep them in hot water, allow them to cool, and use them as eye pads.

Olive oil will make the skin oilier. After washing your face, wipe the blackhead-prone areas with an astringent lotion, using cotton wool. In the morning, after washing your face, make a paste of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) and water. Apply it on the areas with blackheads daily, washing it off after five minutes. Use a facial scrub three times a week on the blackhead-prone areas. You can either buy one or mix rice powder with rose water and use it. Rub it gently on the affected areas, using small circular movements. Leave it on for five minutes before washing it off.

How should aloe vera gel and related products be used? Suggest a monthly facial according to skin type? — Ramya

Aloe vera may be directly applied on the skin. The gel obtained from the plant itself is the leaf pulp or mucilage, found in the inner portion of the leaves. The juice is found just beneath the outer skin of the leaves. However, while using it directly on the skin at home, one should wash the plant well and observe total hygiene. Aloe vera gel or juice can be added to face masks. Take one tablespoon of besan, one teaspoon each of orange peel powder, one teaspoon of curd and one tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Mix these together and apply it on the skin, washing it off after 30 minutes. Salon facials are done according to skin type. If your skin is normal to dry, you can go in for a cleansing-toning-nourishing-mask package. The skin is massaged with a nourishing cream. If the skin is normal to oily, you can settle for a cleansing-exfoliation-extraction of blackheads (clean-up)-toning-mask package. Oily skin should not be massaged with cream.
