Bon Iver album leaves an impression

I’ve fallen in love with a band. No, seriously, I have. I can’t count how many times the music of Bon Iver has been there for me in times of desperation, in times of boredom, in the times I needed to sleep but couldn’t. A fair warning – Bon Iver is not for listening when you’re so happy your heart could burst.

Bon Iver’s new album, “Bon Iver,” was released on Tuesday. I’ve been listening to it almost non-stop since its release and before, thanks to NPR’s First Listen. I highly recommend listening to the whole album in one sitting. Yes, there are individual, distinct songs, but the songs intertwine into a 39 minute melodic album.

Justin Vernon, the mastermind behind Bon Iver, has the sweetest of angelic voices but is also earthy and full. As quoted in a blog on ThoughtCatalog, “his voice was angelic in that it sounded like that of an angel doing an impression of another angel that the original angel didn’t care much for.”

The first song of the album, “Perth,” starts quiet and moves into quiet but rising guitar chords and simple drumming. The song’s full body comes out when the chorus starts. After Vernon croons his lyrics, the song takes an even more intense turn with trumpets and strong drumming, all the while keeping the simple guitar chords in the background. Finally, the song goes out as softly as it started, heading back into the quiet solitude.

Vernon’s new album pulls at the heart strings and makes me sit and contemplate. I know it sounds pretentious, but I’ve found “Bon Iver” to help my mind to quiet and focus on what’s in front of me. Vernon’s melodies, vocals and fantastical lyrics combine for an escape from reality. The silences between and in songs are just as powerful as the melodies.

The last song, “Beth/Rest,” begins with an ‘80s pop ballad theme of synth piano and a touch of sax. My first thought was, “Who decided it was cool to bring back the ‘80s?” But I’ve come to appreciate the crescendo ending of an epic album. Pitchfork’s review of “Beth/Rest” hit the nail on the head – “‘Beth/Rest’ is more about finding comfort and resolution after a musical experience that asked more questions than it answers.”

Bon Iver’s music, especially this new album, continues to leave an impression on me. Perhaps you should let it leave an impression on you.

Billy Talent – Fallen Leaves (Lyrics/Songtext) | How To Get A Job

@chcknfry777 Too bad Billy Talent isn’t ‘Emo’…Hmm, the most logical definition of Emo – Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.
