Scotts Valley McDonald's sees sales rise after renovation
SCOTTS VALLEY -- Ronald McDonald insists he has no plans to retire as chief happiness officer for the world's largest fast-food chain.
The youthful red-wigged white-faced clown said it with a grin Tuesday, visiting a McDonald's that is the first in the San Francisco Bay Area with a new contemporary design that will eventually be seen at 14,000 locations nationwide.
Critics say the character, who's been representing the fast-food chain since 1963, contributes to childhood obesity, but for many, he is simply an icon of nostalgia with a sense of humor.
"He told my son I was his sister," said titian-haired Melissa Walpole, who brought her children, Steve, 9, and Toby, 8, to meet the clown celebrity. "It's something they will always remember."
She wasn't the only one.
More than three dozen people crowded into a ribbon-cutting photo, complete with giant scissors, arranged by the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the occasion.
The restaurant redesign features new lighting and a variety of seating options with chairs made of recycled plastic bottles.
Steve Peat, who owns and operates the Scotts Valley McDonald's with his wife Jan, opted for a flat-screen television offered by the decor company so customers could feel at home, "like you're in your living room."
Annette Hunt, co-owner of Skov Winery, pronounced the color scheme "gorgeous" and the design "hip."
She was impressed how Peat talked the decor company into replacing photos of East Coast oaks with photos of California redwoods.
"And the bathrooms are really nice," she added.
The renovation has been good for sales.
"This store was behind the marketplace. Now it's ahead of the marketplace," said Peat, who co-owns seven locations, including Capitola and Santa Cruz. "It's a total swing."
The Peats have received at least 300 job applications since McDonald's announced its nationwide hiring day in April.
"I have 30 applications in the queue," said Gabriel Vesci, Peat's son-in-law, who is overseeing hiring. "They just keep coming."
About 120 people have been interviewed and 50 hired.
The new hires include Alexandria Douglas, 21, a student transferring to UC Santa Cruz who told the Sentinel in April she really wanted to work for McDonald's on Mission Street.
Vesci, 38, left a career in health care finance two years ago to work for the family business, getting more time with his children by cutting his commute.
