Shirley Wild: Assistance League installs its new president
Cindy Nakamura Summers was installed as the 71st President of Assistance League of Long Beach at the group's annual meeting at The Grand on May 23.
Outgoing President Faye Alperin gave the gavel to Cindy before 260 members and guests, including Cindy's husband Ron and their son Brent. In her remarks, she said that Assistance League would continue the outstanding work it has been doing for the past 70 years in delivering philanthropic programs to the greater Long Beach community.
A clever skit, presented by the Dazzlers Class of 1999, emphasized Cindy's leadership abilities, portraying her as Wonder Woman, complete with cape and crown. It was a multimedia event with video, sound, and lots of action befitting Wonder Woman.
The skit told Wonder Woman's (Cindy Summers') story, from extraordinary baby to young woman, until her true identity was realized when she became a member of Assistance League. Darl Incledon and Jane Jackson narrated the skit; Nanci Gee directed; Mary Jo Mizer, Ellen Wickwire, Linda Kovessy, Pat Montague, Trish Stea, Thea Kalthoff, Harriet Golding, Cathryn Smith and Pam Mundy (Lady Bug Class) participated.
The new Board of Directors was installed: President-Elect Kathy Wade; Bonnie Dorrans; Kathy Lingle; Suzanne Powell; Pat Reep; Joan Twedell; Sharon Denham; Catherine Vandenberg Smith; Julia Mendell; Linda Drummond; Mary Ann Anderson; Rick Rackers Auxiliary Chairman Melissa Murchison; Las Hermanas Auxiliary Chairman Pam Kehret; CAMEO Professional Auxiliary Chairman Janis Kleinberg; and Assisteens Coordinator Patti Brown.
Outgoing President Faye Alperin presented Cindy with the traditional Winifred Campbell white orchid corsage. Past President Pat Reep led the "ringing of the bells," an Assistance League tradition that summoned Faye to appear before the "Court" of Past Presidents.
Another highlight of the morning was the presentation of the Ada Edwards Laughlin Award to Carolyn Lockhart. This award is given to unsung heroines who have been members for a significant number of years and have given outstanding behind-the-scenes service. Her contributions included being chairman of Las Hermanas Auxiliary and chairman of the Howard Collection of Asian Art. As Howard chairman, her greatest contribution has been in displaying and conserving the collection.
The Flo Brooks Award was presented to Randy Wilson, president of Norm Wilson and Sons, in recognition of his many contributions to Assistance League of Long Beach, especially to the Thrift and Vintage Shop and Operation School Bell.

Pointers in Preparing and Delivering a Master of Ceremony Speech
To be chosen as the Master of Ceremony of a special occasion is not only fun but it also gives you the opportunity to give enjoyment to the audience. Since being asked to be a Master of Ceremony for a special event (such as Oscar Awards or introducing outstanding men and women in all fields of human endeavor where these individuals have accomplished outstanding deed and merited public honor for their achievements in their special areas of knowledge, etc.) is a compliment to your skill as a good public speaker, you must know some helpful hints in doing this task.
Conduct the event well. You probably already have the knowledge and the skill to handle almost any event but don’t underestimate what it takes to make this particular occasion work. Remember that "you are not the show." You’re the only the instrument to make the event run smoothly. Remember that the organizers of the special event have the talent and the people and they have it all ready and packaged. All you have to do now that you are chosen to do the task of Master of Ceremony is to present the package in the most gracious, lively manner as possible. Avoid personal jokes and antics so as not to appear that you are trying to steal the show. Such jokes and antics actually detract from the presentation of the important personages and the speaker. Be totally familiar with the special occasion. Demand a list of the participants and the schedule of the events before the day. Carefully review your speech and if you anticipate any problem of memory or pronunciation of technical or scientific terms, write down these minor problems and rehearse your speech so that you can master whatever difficulties you encounter in memory or pronunciation of words. When you are now the Master of Ceremony of the special event, don’t read your speech from a sheet of paper before your listening group or try to sell the event or appraise it afterwards. Remember that the special event will speak for itself. Also, don’t demand applause where there is no need for it. Once you assume the role of Master of Ceremony for an important special event, be sure to come earlier than the time you are expected to do the task so that you may have ample minutes to familiarize with the stage, the sound effects, the organization, and the type of audience you will have.
