There have been many legends over the 64 years the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing has been in existence.
Infineon Raceway, with its new “Legends in Sonoma” program, will have the pleasure of hosting two of the most memorable legends in the sport, Ned Jarrett and Bobby Allison, during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ Toyota/SaveMart 350 race this weekend.
Allison and Jarrett were inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame this year.
Jarrett: Great racer and broadcaster
“Gentleman Ned” Jarrett is a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion with 50 career victories, including an impressive 28 wins during the 1964 and ’65 seasons. He was named one of NASCAR’s “50 Greatest Drivers” in 1998.
Jarrett grew up in Hickory, N.C. and worked on his parents’ farm and sawmill.
He started racing in the NASCAR Sportsman Series (which became the Busch Series and today is known as the Nationwide Series) in 1953 at Hickory Motor Speedway.
In 1956, Jarrett finished second to Ralph Earnhardt in the National standings. In 1957 and ’58, he won the NASCAR Sportsman Series National title.
During his Sportsman career he won more than 200 races, with state championships In North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.
Jarrett played a role in the formation of the NASCAR Busch Series as a 12-year coordinator of the Series, and as a representative for Anheuser-Busch.
He was a major influence on Busch Beer becoming the Series sponsor.
He began his Cup Series career in 1959 and won two races on a limited schedule. In 1960, his first full year competing in the Cup Series, he won five races and was fifth in championship points.

Jarrett retired from driving in 1966 at the age of 34, but continued his involvement with NASCAR racing. He did a weekly racing show at WNNC in Newton, then joined the Universal Racing Network and, later, MRN as a radio announcer, where his son Glenn
