Airline recruitment director recommended by study

The Gary/Chicago International Airport should create a position responsible for attracting airliners, according to a study accepted by the Airport Board on Monday.

Hiring a business development and marketing manager is one recommendation found in the staffing study completed by an outside consulting firm. The airport could require the position as early as July.

“The recommendation to hire a business development/marketing person that will help us with the airline recruitment side of things of course that is one of our major goals here going forward,” Airport Board member Ross Amundson said. “To hire an individual that can help us get activity at the airport, that’s a big part of the report.”

The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority could bring on a contractor for the position, but no decision has been made, Amundson said.

The study also recommends the airport quickly hire a permanent director.

The Airport Board has discussed naming Interim Airport Director Steve Landry permanently to the position but first wanted to review the study. Landry, who earns $10,000 a month, was appointed to the position when former Airport Director Chris Curry left for a new job in Florida. Under Curry, Landry was the airport’s deputy director.

The Airport Board accepted the study unanimously but that doesn’t mean board members agree with all its recommendations, Amundson said at the Airport Board meeting on Monday. Instead, the Airport Board will use the study as a tool when deliberating staffing decisions.

“We wanted to make sure we reviewed the report,” Airport Board President Nate Williams said, “and that of course came from the director, he wanted to make sure we all had an understanding of what the report was asking for going forward.”

The timing or need for a deputy director depends on the director’s qualifications, according to the study. But if commercial service is reestablished at the airport, the hiring of a deputy director should become more likely.

The airport has a full-time staff of 17 employees, and the report confirms the number is comparable with airports of similar size, Amundson said. If commercial air traffic picks up, the report recommends an initial 20-member staff, but that includes the conditional position of the deputy director.

No.3 Qualification and Requirements:

Minimum of three years experience on line or base maintenance Extensive knowledge of the A320 with CFM 56 power plants and or 8767 with GE-CF6-80 power plants Ideal candidates must be passionate about their work and need not be residents of Nigeria. Limited position exists for licenced Engineers not currently valid on A320 or 8767 who are under 40 years of age with at least five years experience on jet engines and Airframes. Successful candidates may be selected for manufacturer’s training on A320/8767 subject to terms. These Engineers must be University graduates in addition to being licenced Engineers
