Cycling: Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic may be difficult to save
Two years ago, the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic celebrated its golden anniversary, marking 50 years of elite racing. The four-day stage race was glowing with pride.The list of cycling legends who have competed in the classic race over the years reads like a who’s who of North American cycling, with names such as seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong , Hall of Famer Davis Phinney, Connie Carpenter, Tyler Hamilton, Louis Garneau and Frank McCormack . Two Team Radio Shack members who will be competing in the Tour de France next month — Chris Horner (overall winner in 2002, five-time stage winner and winner of this year’s Tour of California) and Levi Leipheimer (winner of two stages and second in 1999) — also have had success in Fitchburg. And the list goes on.
But the race suffered a major setback last year when it was announced that the four-day event would return to its early days as a one-day criterium this year. Financial difficulties forced the cutback.
Then last week, organizers announced the one-day criterium would be canceled this year because a June 13 fire at the Johnsonia Building in downtown Fitchburg closed some streets along the course and officials could not guarantee the roads would be open for the 52nd annual race July 3. The fire-ravaged building sits on an inside corner of the crit.
Despite the news last year, executive race director Ed Collier had remained positive that the race would never go away and the change would be temporary. However, optimism may be fading.
“I think we’re at a more significant place than we were last year,” said Collier. “There are a lot of people who want this race to continue, but it’s getting harder and harder.”
“It’s been two significant blows the last couple of years,” he said. “The feedback has been positive, but moving forward it’s going to take a lot of honesty among the staff to see where we go.”
Going into this year’s race, the question was whether the four-day stage race would return to Central Massachusetts. Now, the question is will the event ever be held again?
“The staff of the race will take the next couple of weeks to regroup and make some key decisions on the future. We have to let the shock of this settle before we make a choice on the future,” Collier said.

Ok so I went to Albies, got my 5 nature valley…and nothing printed out! At the same time I bought 2 $100 home depot GCs and the $20 cats didn’t print. The manager gave me a $40 Albies GC for that, but for at least the $3 natures valley cat (cuz I know u mentioned the milk cat wasn’t advertised), is that something I can contact the catalina company about? Was that a regional promo? I’m in San Diego…thnx in advance Btw I LOVE ur sight! Me and my friend are always on it when we should be working!
