Photo Gallery/Video: Native American Marine Participates in Powwow
For Staff Sgt. Chase Stevens, the Powwow by the Sea in Imperial Beach on Saturday was nothing new to him.
"I grew up going to powwows," he said.
The 26-year-old explosive ordnance disposal Marine is a member of the Ojibiway tribe. There are several different ways to spell the tribe name, he said.
The Native American garb that Stevens donned had fur draped down to his hips and was decorated with patches depicting grapes, water and ferns typically worn by natural healers. One aspect of the outfit featured the Marine Corps eagle, globe and anchor emblem.
Some of the outfits other participants wore were traditional, but some people—especially one youngster—dressed in a more contemporary manner. His outfit featured Chargers-themed accoutrement.
"When it comes to design, it's all up to the individual," Stevens said. "Mine are all Ojibiway design."
Stevens’ clothing was traditional, except for the Marine emblem in his tail feathers, of course.
The event attracted hundreds of people to Portwood Pier Plaza. With arts and crafts, food and intertribal dancing, the powwow continued through Sunday with tribes from across the region in attendance.
This year's theme was "Honoring our Ancestors."
