Troop 161 celebrates with two new Eagles

Walter Thompson, the son of Walt and Janet Thompson of Kearney, received his Eagle Scout rank on Dec. 2, 2010. Walter began scouting in 1999 as a Tiger Cub in Pack 299. During those years he received the North Star Bear Claw Award for completing all of the Bear activities. He received the Webelo’s 20er award, the Conservation Award and in February 2004, earned the highest award in Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light. Also during his Cub Scout career, he attended day camp for four years and Webelos camp for two years. The last year he attended day camp he served as a Den Chief. Walter served at two day camp’s formal flag retirements as a stripe bearer. After earning his Arrow of Light award, Walter crossed over into Troop 992. He transferred his membership to Troop 161 in December 2005. It is in Troop 161 that he finished his Trail to Eagle Scout. He has earned 55 merit badges, the 12-month camper award, four Star Religious Award, the Leave No Trace Award and the World Conservation Award. He also received recognition for the countless hours he has worked for the Salvation Army. Walter attended Brownsea Training in June 2006, and then went on to staff that training in 2007. Walter has camped 113 nights with the troop. He is looking forward to the Philmont Trek that the troop is taking this summer. He is a 2011 graduate of Kearney High School, participated for four years in football, wrestling and choir. He lettered in all three activities. He was on the 2009 Class 4 State Football Championship Team, the Bulldogs. Thompson attended Missouri Boys State in 2010. He has also earned the Academic Achievement Award for his high school years. During the last semester of his senior year, he served as a sportscaster for the district and state wrestling tournament and several home basketball games and wrestling functions. During 2007, Walter was able to go on a European Tour. Thompson is enrolled at UCM in Warrensburg, and plans to be involved in the Simultaneous Membership Program for Army National Guard and Army ROTC. He plans to major in criminal justice and a double minor in military science and emergency management. This is made possible by receiving the UCM Boys State Scholarship and the Kearney Harris Community Service Scholarship. Carter’s Eagle Project consisted of collecting funds to purchase smoke detectors. He then worked with the Kearney Fire Department to determine an older area of town that may have had a need for smoke detectors.

Six Mason Boy Scouts recently earned the Arrow of Light award , Cub Scouting’s highest award.

Mason Cub Scout Pack 998 honored the boys at its annual Blue and Gold Banquet held at Mason United Methodist Church.

To earn the award, a Cub Scout must be in the fifth grade, active in a den for at least six months and earn their Webelos Badge.

He must also complete a series of requirements designed to familiarize himself with the ideals and principles of scouting, participate in at least three outdoor activities including two overnight camp-outs, attend a Boy Scout troop meeting and a Scoutmaster’s conference, and earn a minimum of eight activity badges.
