'American Idol' seeks a star in St. Louis
The last time "American Idol" held auditions in St. Louis, back in 2004, an unknown blond singer named Carrie Underwood from Oklahoma unassumingly tried out. By the time it was all over, she walked away the most successful "Idol" in history.
In addition to Underwood, that St. Louis audition also unearthed top 10 contestant Nikko Smith and top 20 contestant Aloha Mi'Sho (then Mischeaux), not to mention a number of aspiring singers who came out of nowhere.
This week, "American Idol" returns to St. Louis in hopes of finding its next superstar. Auditions are all day Tuesday at Scottrade Center, with preregistration for wristbands taking place Sunday to Tuesday.
"American Idol" supervising producer Patrick Lynn says returning to St. Louis was a no-brainer after finding Underwood here and meeting other interesting characters.
"We loved everything about St. Louis, and we had a great time," Lynn says. "When we pick a city, we look at where we haven't gone and where we want to return to, and St. Louis was always a top choice. It wasn't at the top of the list because every city is at the top of the list. But it was on the list.
"We love the city and we can't wait to get there. And we love the whole look of the Arch."
Ever since Ryan Seacrest announced on "American Idol" in May that St. Louis would be the first audition city for the upcoming 11th season of the hit TV show, aspiring singers have been buzzing over how to best prepare for their turn in the spotlight.
Two such singers are Curtis Finch Jr., 23, a University of Missouri-St. Louis music education student who auditioned in 2004, and Courtney Moore, 18, a recent Eureka High School graduate who works at a local Subway sandwich shop.
A sign at her Subway reads, "Trying out for 'American Idol,' ask me to sing," and she's been singing Underwood's "Before He Cheats" ever since. It's something her co-workers came up with to help her ease her nerves about her audition. She will sing the Script's "Breakeven" for her audition.
"I can relate to the song," says Moore, who is trying to figure out what to wear. "As a performer, I have to wear heels. You can't wear flats."
Finch was inspired to audition seven years ago after seeing Fantasia Barrino's dream come true during Season3.
"I didn't get any sleep, which is why I don't think I performed to my greatest ability," he says. "But I got to meet a lot of people, and it showed me what to do now and what not to do.
