Council salutes top athletes

Much as she would like to be here, fast-rising soccer star Jonelle Filigno won’t be at the Mississauga Sports Council awards dinner tomorrow to personally accept her co-winner award as the 2010 Female Athlete of the Year. She’s otherwise engaged, preparing to represent Canada in this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup at the end of this month. “I feel so honoured to win another award from the Mississauga Sports Council,” she said from Rome where she and her Canadian teammates have been in training camp for the past eight weeks or so, putting the finishing touches on what is the most extensive preparation in Canada’s soccer history. “I wish I could be there to receive the award but I won't be able to. There are no more breaks leading up to the World Cup.” Filigno was chosen the city’s Female Athlete of the Year the first time in 2008 when, as an 18-year-old, she burst on the soccer scene in a spectacular fashion. She was also awarded Canada’s Female Soccer Player of the Year honours – the youngest ever player to achieve such a feat – and she has been blazing quite a trail ever since. Apart from an injury that kept her on the sidelines for a while, Filigno has enjoyed a highly successful season on the field helping Canada’s women to qualify for the World Cup and wrestling away the North American champion’s title from the United States. The squad also won the prestigious 2010 Torneio Internacional in Brazil and the Cyprus Women’s Cup. Along the way they have met and defeated just about all the top teams in the world, which explains why Canada is sixth in the most recent FIFA ranking. Heady heights, indeed. “This ranking, being the highest in history for us, has given us another boost of confidence and belief that we are one of the best teams in the world and that we have the ability to beat those ranked ahead of us,” said Filigno. “However, the ranking, along with our success in the past sixth months, does raise expectations, both from within the team and outside of the team. People expect us to do really well, but we also hold those same expectations to ourselves. We know what we're capable of and the belief that we have now is greater than it has ever been.” Last year she became the highest ranked Canadian junior girl player, occupying the 23rd position at the U-15 world level.
