No shortage of inspiration in beef initiative
AN inspiring rural story from Queensland is the perfect precede to another round of opportunity in the 2011 Cattle Council of Australia’s Rising Champions Initiative .It gives young people between 21 and 35, who are involved in the beef industry, the opportunity to network with industry leaders and have their voice heard by their industry decision makers.
Last year, seven young finalists, each representing their state farming organisation, competed for the winning title of NAB Agribusiness Beef Industry Rising Champion and took a week-long beef tour in Denver, Colorado.
These included Christian Coffey from Queensland.
Christian Coffey and his wife, Rebecca, currently manage the aggregation of Paraway Pastoral Company stations located 70km north of Cloncurry – Clonagh, Kalmeta and Violetvale. They have two children Hannah and Hughen.
Christian grew up in Singleton NSW and has always had a keen interest in working on the land after his involvement with his family’s small beef cattle operations.
After finishing school in 1995, he started work with Australian Agricultural Company (AA Co) as a Jackeroo at Austral Downs on the NT- Queensland border.
Christian worked full time for 13 years on various AA Co properties within the Barkly tablelands and the Queensland gulf.
In January 2006, Christian and his wife were promoted to manage Clonagh station, which was a steer growing-out property within the AA Co group at that time.
They thrived in the role of station management and held a passion and desire to improve the station’s operational efficiencies.
In March 2009, Clonagh was purchased by Paraway Pastoral Company and their management duties were extended to amalgamating Clonagh with neighbouring properties Kalmeta and Violetvale stations to form one managed property comprising 8000 head of breeding cows and 32,000 head of growing-out cattle.
Christian and Rebecca are passionate about their staff and feel they are the most important ingredient in making Clonagh a successful property. It has allowed them as managers to see great progress in operational efficiencies over the last five years.
The Rising Champions Initiative is free and includes industry meetings, producer forums, mentoring, gala dinner, travel to Longreach and a chance to win an all expenses paid trip to Denver, US, as 2012 NAB Agribusiness Beef Industry Rising Champion. Entrants need to fill out a questionnaire at www.cattlecouncil.com.
