Dentists, Pharmacists Raise Awareness of Medication-Induced Dry Mouth
/ CNW / - Leading pharmaceutical and dental organizations together to promote oral health and awareness of dry mouth, a side effect often caused by taking prescription and nonprescription drugs. More than 500 medications can contribute to dry mouth, including antihistamines (for allergies or asthma), antihypertensives (for high blood pressure), decongestants, analgesics, diuretics and antidepressants. In its most severe form, dry mouth can lead to extensive tooth decay, mouth ulcers and oral infections, particularly among the elderly.Nearly half of all Americans regularly take at least one prescription medication daily, including many that produce dry mouth, and over 90 percent of adults over age 65 do the same. Because older adults often use one or more of these drugs, they are considered at significantly higher risk of suffering a dry mouth.
The American Dental Association (ADA), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the American Pharmacists Association (APHA) work together to increase awareness of the impact of medication on dry mouth , a state known health professionals such as xerostomia.

Signs and symptoms At some point, most people feel short-term dry mouth due to nervousness, stress or just be upset. This is normal and have no long-term consequences. But the cases of chronic dry mouth persist for long periods of time. Common symptoms include difficulty eating, speaking and chewing, burning sensation, or a frequent need to sip water while eating.
