Free trade warning over apples

An organization representing the New Zealand fruit growers said he probably will not seek new markets in Tasmania if the ban on imports of apple is thrown.

Biosecurity Australia has given the green light to the importation of apples from New Zealand to Australia yesterday.

The Tasmanian Government says it is exploring ways to oppose the importation of apples from New Zealand because of the risk of importation of fire blight disease.

Unlike Australia, New Zealand's apple industry is not immune from the disease that affects the growth and appearance of the fruit.

Trade Minister, Craig Emerson, said island state of Tasmania does not mean he will be able to continue its ban on apple.

Mr. Emerson said the world today, Tasmania was bound by the decision of the World Trade Organization to allow the importation of apples like any other Australian state.

He says that if Tasmania sought to break the decision, then the farmers of the State would be subject to reprisals from New Zealand.

"Tasmanian farmers export a lot more than they produce and it would put Tasmanian farmers and mainland farmers in the firing line in a potential trade-war, where New Zealand would be entitled under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules to apply tariffs of up to 100 per cent on our agricultural exports to New Zealand," he said.

The Premier, Lara Giddings conceeds there is a risk of retaliation from New Zealand if Tasmania maintains the blockade.

"Possibly, we will work through these issues as well but again, what is paramount here is that we do not want to risk pest or disease entering Tasmania that are not already there and undermining not only our industry but also our reputation and wider Tasmanian brand, "she said.

Peter Beaven meal Fruit New Zealand says its members would be targeting unsaturated markets on the continent.

But he says regardless of where the apples from New Zealand goes to the opposition of the Government of Tasmania for imports is against the agreement of the countries' free trade.

"Free trade is a two-way street," he said.

"It's not a one way street and Australian officials who are trying to make a political interference in what should be a scientific need to get out of it and they need to let science prevail, because this is what the WTO decided.
