Ceres fund-raising effort for young cancer patient

A massive fund-raising effort has begun in Ceres to raise money for a 12-year-old boy currently undergoing intensive cancer treatment.

The community has come together to raise the money for Bell Baxter High School pupil Jordan Laing, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour and a growth on his spine in March.

Jordan has already had an operation on his brain and it is hoped the cancerous growth on his spine can be treated with an intensive dose of chemotherapy.

Prior to his illness Jordan played for Raith Rovers under 13 team, but he began suffering from bad migraines and an MRI scan revealed the tumours.

Much of his time has been spent at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh and luckily his mum Norma Hopkins has been able to stay with him in family accommodation.

Since Jordan began his hospital treatment, Norma’s friend Sarah Buttercase and other friends and family have been busy organising a fun day on Ceres Green to raise money to help the family when Jordan comes out of hospital.

Sarah said: “We just want to show our support.

“Ceres is a very close community and we know this has been very hard for them all including Jordan’s brother Kierran and Norma’s partner Scott Mills.

“We just want to do what we can to make sure they don’t have to worry about things such as paying for medical equipment when Jordan comes home.

“Donations will also be made to the Sick Kids and the Clic Sargeant charity.”

The event takes place on Sunday, June 19, from noon-4p.m and Sarah is hopeful as many people as possible will come from across north east Fife.

She added: “We want to have a fun, positive event for the children and we are hopful that Jordan might make it along as well.

“There will be lots of things for the whole family including ‘beat the goalie’with the Dundee United mascot, face-painting, a bouncy castle, a putting green — as Jordan loves golf — and a barbecue with food and drink generously donated by the Ceres Inn and Ceres Butchers.

“Lots of the youngsters have volunteered to help including a lot of Jordan’s school friends.

“We have had a lot of very generous contributions from local companies including Fife Animal Park, Bonkers in Cupar, the Deer Centre and the New Picture House in St Andrews, which is just excellent; we are very, very grateful.

“We are hoping we can lift everyone’s spirits and raise lots of money at the same time!
