State hospital director to retire

Wynona Winfield long had stressed to her colleagues and coworkers the need for balance between career and personal in their lives.

Recently, the Waynesboro native decided to follow her own advice.

After more than 30 years dedicated to helping shape the face of the mental health care system in Mississippi, Winfield will step down on June 30 as the director of South Mississippi State Hospital in Purvis.

"I'm a firm believer in balance in life, and I have tried to instill that in my staff," Winfield said. "I think the most successful people at work, no matter what they do, are people who know how to balance work life with personal life with spiritual life, all aspects of what makes life good. You have to have that balance to be really, really successful.

"I have worked really, really hard for a long time, and I am just a believer in having that balance."

And Winfield said incidents in recent years led her to start thinking hard about her own balance sheet. Her brother and mother passed away in a span of three years.

"You start thinking about how fragile life is," Winfield said.

There was the re-tug of the maternal strings.

"I have a grandson, my first grandchild, and he's 19 months old," Winfield said. "My friends told me what it was going to be like when you have a grandchild, but there's no way to understand that until you have one."

Then, there was the long-harbored wish to travel, the simple luxury of doing nothing more than sitting on a front porch, watching a Mississippi sunset.

"You start rolling all that together, and it was time," Winfield said.

Winfield, 62, had spent the past 11 years at SMSH, heading up the acute-care, regional psychiatric facility's operations from the day it opened its doors in January 2000.

The hospital provides services for adults with mental illness to residents in 15 counties: Covington, Forrest, George, Greene, Hancock, Harrison, Jones, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Lamar, Marion, Pearl River, Perry, Stone and Wayne counties.

Winfield said she had been pondering stepping away for the past few years. But budget concerns in lean economic times - severe enough that Gov. Haley Barbour recommended closing both SMSH and its sister regional, North Mississippi State Hospital in Tupelo - kept her at the helm.

"It was jut not a good time to leave," she said. "I felt like I need to stay on and offer my support to the services and preservation of our hospital and what we do here, and so I stayed on through two more legislative sessions.
